ABOUT THE ARTIST

JUPs was born in Munich in 1956. He grew up in a family with a strong artistic tradition. His grandfather and father were both artists—one in the visual arts and the other in goldsmithing. Both had workshops where JUPs spent a lot of time and enjoyed being.

In first grade, he had his first artistic experience outside the family. In class, he drew a picture of St. Nicholas, but not like the other students—in a concrete, colorful style—but rather abstractly. His teacher at the time said, “But Uzzi, you can’t draw it that way.” The childish hurt that came with this transformed into a deep desire to paint his way past this perceived inability. The dialectic of the aesthetic boundary gave rise to a personal aesthetic experience that shaped and expanded his own artistic style.

After graduating from high school, JUPs turned his attention to education, psychology, and psychoanalysis alongside his artistic work. Beginning in 1990, JUPs studied regularly at the europäische Kunstakademie Trier. Since 1995, he has been working regularly with artists at the ATELIERPROJEKT München.

Since 2021, he has been working in his studio, JUPs, in Tuscany and in the former studio of the late sculptor Hans Ladner in Munich. He sees himself as an independent artist who enjoys a playful approach to his artistic practice
